About us

What happens when a community is ignored?

In 2018, Astrolabe Park was the subject of an unsolicited bid by a consortium of the University of NSW and two sporting organisations to take over and develop the parkland into a professional sporting complex.

The community wanted to make sure its voice was heard. Friends of Astrolabe Park Inc was formed and the community successfully fought off that bid.

But that is not the end of our story.

Our precious parks should not be at the mercy of powerful organisations or professional sporting associations that want to snap up open green space because they have the money to do it.

Yet Astrolabe Park is still at risk of development.

Bayside Council must put in place a Master Plan for Astrolabe Park - and a precinct management plan for Daceyville - which recognises and protects the unique and historic nature of these places.

The aim of Friends is to foster understanding and engagement between the residents of Daceyville, the community of park users, the Council and the landowner, Sydney Water.
